About Addictions

Addictions come in many forms. In our society people struggle with all kinds of stresses and challenges that at times may push us into using and abusing substances. Alcohol and drugs are the most commonly understood addictions however; many people now face more complicated addictions that include addictions to food, gambling, shopping, sex, the Internet and others.

How I Can Help

As a Senior Addictions Counsellor and Family Counsellor at AADAC (Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission) Youth Services, I understand what you and your family are facing.

Addiction treatment involves a thorough assessment, a comprehensive treatment plan and the involvement and support of those who love you. It also requires a strong commitment to change and this is where I am often the greatest help.

Together we will work to strengthen your commitment to change your addictive behaviours.

Assessment, education, support and understanding, a concrete and realistic plan, developing and practicing new coping skills, relaxation techniques and strategies is where we start. You will know you are on the right track when you have created a new vision for your life and future.

I also believe that the greatest chance of success happens when we involve important family members. Families can learn about what you are facing and how they can best support the changes you are trying to make. They too often need to make change in order to support you. Family Therapy can help keep your family together and on your side while you take on your addictions.
